Just to qualify: it works fine with the following commands for me
(which of course do more than the original problem of passing the WEP
key).

# iwconfig eth1 essid <essid> key open 1234567890
# ifconfig eth1 up
# dhclient eth1

However, despite populating /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1
with the appropriate arguments,

# ifup eth1

produces

Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Resource temporarily unavailable.
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Resource temporarily unavailable.

and no wireless connectivity. I haven't had time to see which
commands in the ifup script are throwing a wobbly, but if/when I do
I'll report back.

The other minor glitch is that running system-config-network produces
the following,

# system-config-network
Warning : Device eth1 has been compiled with version 18
of Wireless Extension, while we are using version 16.
Some things may be broken...

The GUI pops up. However, it seems that the dhclient daemon isn't
being stopped/started when I use the buttons to deactivate/activate
eth1 (and I *think* it should) and so I'm having to kill it and
restart it manually.

I'm afraid I don't have time to investigate these in any more detail
this side of Christmas, but as and when I do I'll report back.
