Xwindows and 80x50 virtual terminals?

Does anyone know how to get Xwindows, runlevel 5 and some 80x50
system font [1] to work under SL30x?

When I do, I consoles that are, well, double spaced (one can only
see the first 25 lines of the console and the other 25 lines are
all blank.)  

I've seen the problem with three different video cards, so I doubt
it's a driver or hardware problem.
