My habit is to alt/ctrl/F1 and do a character mode login, then run
/usr/bin/redhat-config-xfree86 as root. (Btw, we normally log on as
ourselves, and then use sudo -s to get root, rather than logging-on
directly as root - if only to help with auditing who did what).

Afterwards, alt/ctrl/F7 and alt/ctrl/backspace to restart the X
server.

There are various other redhat-config-* scripts which can be useful.

hope this helps.
