Hmmm... now I'm talking to myself...

Ok.  I've solved it.  There are other applications with this problem,
it's just that the ones I was trying didn't have any action associated
with the right-click so they worked fine.  This means it isn't a problem
with firefox.

It looks like the newer XOrg is pickier about the mouse config in
xorg.conf.  My mouse says IntelliMouse on the bottom but it seems it is
really an IntelliMouse Explorer.  The "Protocol" setting was "IMPS/2"
which worked in older versions of X.  Now I have "Protocol" set to
"auto" and it looks like everything is working again.

That was fun.
