Well, I started off being willing to accept anything that was
unambiguous in the international context...

In fact, when you said dd MMM yyyy, I was on the point of saying "I
could live with that"; but then your remark about sorting hit me, and
so I didn't actually say it, and inclined instead to yyyy-mm-dd
