we've been installing this package on our SL5 x86_64 systems for more
than two years now.

Maybe I could persuade you to include compat-readline43.i386 as well? 
The same reasons apply, and there's even less potential for problems.

Apparently, both will be included with TUV's 5.4 release (see BZ
#482800).
