Martin, I recently met the same issue on getting a 4600 up and running
with all cores. The machine in question was running SuSE I'm afraid.
We provided an updated kernel for it, with
CONFIG_NR_CPUS set to 128
This is a 2.6.16 kernel as these later kernels have better NUMA features.

I would advise getting a recent (say) Fedora kernel source RPM and
configuring it up, or maybe better one from the SL 5 beta.
Or even taking the 2.6.9 EL kernel source and setting CONFIG_NR_CPUs
higher.
