Have you tried completely closing your thunderbird and restarting it?
I was on a machine that I was unaware it had updated thunderbird, and some 
things worked, and some didn't.  I then tried to close it, and thought I had 
succeeded, but not really.  I had to do a "ps ax" and kill each thunderbird 
instance.
The problem is that the libraries have been removed under thunderbird, and I 
think one of those libraries that was removed, isn't letting it shut down 
correctly.
