In general, cross-compile works just fine.
Most default SL installs do not include enough 32-bit -devel packages,
but this is more the fault of the SL installer - it does not have
an "install everything" button - do you have to identify and
install the missing pieces one by one.
Also sometimes the autoconf tools actively prevent cross-compilation
and have to be fooled by using "setarch i686".
