  i'm reading the official RHEL docs over at redhat.com, the
deployment guide, section on cron and, sure enough, section 16.1.2,
states that, "The main configuration file to schedule jobs is
/etc/anacrontab ...".  i guess that's how it works now, it just took
me by surprise.
