It almost sounds as if this is a bug in dkms_autoinstaller. I suggest
you try contacting DKMS developers (Dell support?) and / or check
their git at:

http://linux.dell.com/cgi-bin/cgit.cgi/dkms.git/

However, what I'd really recommend is to ditch dkms and go for
kABI-tracking kmods offered by ELRepo :

http://elrepo.org/tiki/kmod-nvidia
http://elrepo.org/tiki/wl-kmod

The nvidia package is quite easy to install. wl-kmod needs some work
but it's worth the effort, I think.
