SL6.1, newest kernel+all fixes

For some months we discover a slowdown of selected machines ever 80-90
machines. There is high CPU load and the machine is getting less
responsive for a few seconds up to one or two minutes. No process are
running on high load - only CPU load in atop is high.

Affected machines are Core I7 on ASUS P6T and Core2 Duo on ASUS P5K.

After checking a hundred of things we isolated the problem to the
polling of a DVD drive and polling of USB card readers.

When disabling the polling in HAL and UDEV the problems disappear.
But in my understanding the polling is done every 2 seconds - can there
be a race condition every 80-90 minutes?

Any idea?
Thank you in advance!
