Press <ctrl><alt>f2> and see if you get a command prompt.
<ctrl<alt><f1> will get you back.

Try logging in as another user.  You can create another user
by logging in as at the <ctrl><alt><f2> prompt.  Run
     man useradd
at the prompt to get instructions

What kind of video card do you have your VM configured for?
