It's been years since I done this (about 12 years) so forgive me if my 
memory doesn't serve me correctly, you may get a better answer from someone 
else too, but when I did this back then I think I used the "frame buffer" of 
the video card to increase the res on the terminals.

It was a kernel optional parameter onthe boot line from memory too. Being a 
frame buffer, it means it may be video card dependent too. I'm sure a google 
search of the above "frame buffer" topic will get you some results.
