When things are really hosed you can:

   # first step matters only if you have special settings
   # you need to save
   mv /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config-OLD
   X -configure
   # edit /etc/X11/XF86Config if necessary using lines from /etc/X11/XF86Config-OLD
   startx
   redhat-config-xfree86
   # exit X and edit /etc/X11/XF86Config if necessary using lines
   # from /etc/X11/XF86Config-OLD
