Haven;t seen that ;-) (as kindly pointed to me by the originator of the
thread ...) .. must fetch more coffee from the machine ...

Actually initrd-2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp.img is a gzipped cpio
archive NOT gzipped filesystem,

# gzip -dc /boot/initrd-2.6.9-42.0.3.EL.cernsmp.img > xx && file xx
xx: ASCII cpio archive (SVR4 with no CRC)

So it cannot be mounted ..
