We get this too.  To work around we use the "i810" driver rather than
the "intel" one.

We see the "intel" driver hard locking as it stops the server on x86_64
machines, and have done since SL5.0 (sorry for not reporting a bug).
The "i810" driver in SL5.2 x86_64 seems to be fine at first glance.

I *think* that if you run X without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf file at all
it chooses the "i810" driver, but kudzu suggests the "intel" one.
