I know for 4.x (the 2.6 kernels) there actually isn't a athlon kernel. 
They merged them all that stuff into the regular kernel.
I don't know about anyone else, but for the developers dealing with 
building modules for kernels ... this saves alot of hassles.

I haven't looked at the 3.0.x (the 2.4 kernels)
