Sinced it has been stopped you probably have a machine in a steady
state* with a virtual console that lets you log in in text mode.
If not you need to find some way of running "init 3".

prefdm is the preferred display manager, probably gdm.
It keeps restarting because your X server is crashing:
 	/var/log/Xorg.0.log
should give some clue as to why.

*This message is printed by the component that stops prefdm
from repeatedly switching to a new vt and starting an X server,
which makes logging in on a text console "fun".
