What I have:
jdk-1.6.0_01-fcs downloaded from Sun and installed with rpm -Uhv.
java-1.6.0-sun-compat-1.6.0.01-1jpp rebuild from SRPM, downloaded from
http://www.jpackage.org/ - you find it here:
http://linux.web.psi.ch/dist/scientific/50/psi/all/java-1.6.0-sun-compat-1.6.0.01-1jpp.i586.rpm
firefox plugin works with the rpms.
By the way, the link in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins is done by
java-1.6.0-sun-compat-1.6.0.01-1jpp:
$ ll /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 77 Jun 8 20:56
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so ->
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.01/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
