Forgive me, I don't normally gush like this but FreeNX warrants it . . .
I love FreeNX! The RPMs installed easily on SL41 and performance is
nothing short of amazing. I can remotely run a KDE session over a 768K
DSL line and it's almost as fast as sitting in front of the machine,
fully as good as Windows Remote Desktop, maybe even a little snappier.
FreeNX binds to the SSHD server so communications is a no-brainer. There
are Windows clients available to so it's great in a mixed environment.
OpenGL screen-savers like "Atlantis" even work over DSL!
Oh, and to speak to the original question; you can indeed disconnect
from a running session and reconnect later.
Linux Journal has been running a series of articles on the subject:

OK, I'm done! ;-)
