The el5_* has nothing to do with what it is compatible with.  It only 
tells you what the last release was released.
So, while RHEL5 Update 2 was the latest and greatest, the rpm's had 
el5_2.  Now that Update 3 has been released, the new rpm's have el5_3.
Why?
I don't know.  I didn't make us that rule, RedHat did, and if anyone has 
found a web page explaining their reasoning, please send it to me, 
because it drives me nuts.

Did I test php on older SL 5's, yes.  Did I test to see if it broke 
SquirrelMail?  No.  I'm sorry about that.
