Yes and I was writing my email when you were writing yours.  Good they did 
not smash each other in transfer :-)

"yum clean all" only cleans the enabled repos not the disabled repos.

yum --enablerepo=\* clean all

will really clean them all.

That is the latest yum for both 4.4 and 4.8.

That is the latest rpm for 4.8 .

What is the output of

   yum list extras

Hope it is not memory intensive too.
