I have the similar ASUS Crosshair-2 mobos and they work just fine
with the normal linux drivers from latest vanilla kernels.

So your step 1 should say "convince SL & upstream kernel packagers
to include up-to-date drivers from vanilla kernel".

Nothing to do with ASUS - for once they did everything right and
made boards actually supported by recent linux kernels. (If not
by the antique RH and SL kernels).
